International Exchange Program: A Visit to the University of Sheffield in the UK
The CheongDae Times regular reporter Hoseok An
As the hot summer began, our university conducted an overseas dispatch and training program in the UK from July 1 to August 23, lasting about two months. The partner institution was the University of Sheffield, which is a sister university of ours.
Our university has many sister institutions, among which the University of Sheffield in the UK has been known for its short-term and language study programs. It is recognized as a school with high student satisfaction due to its diverse academic and living support. Additionally, this program is conducted with the support of subsidies from the Chungbuk Human Resources Development Institute, facilitating global training opportunities.
The theme of this project is to establish strategies for the overseas expansion and local branding of Osong K-Beauty products. In particular, the global spread of Korean Wave culture has increased interest in K-Beauty. With the growing interest in K-Beauty in the UK, we have developed overseas expansion strategies for Osong K-Beauty products through this program. Additionally, the UK has the advantage of easy access to various European countries, making it a favorable location. This program is expected to foster the growth of local businesses as well as the development of students.
Na Kyung Lee, a student from the Department of Airline Service, Class of 2022, who participated in this program, said, 'The reason I chose the UK is closely related to my dream of becoming a flight attendant. As a flight attendant, I need to communicate with passengers from various nationalities and understand different cultural backgrounds while providing services, so English is an essential skill. The UK is the birthplace of the English language, and it offers an environment where I can travel to various European countries and experience diverse cultures, making it the ideal place to develop the skills needed as a flight attendant.' She also mentioned that she participated in the program to gain a broader perspective.

She also mentioned that she participated in the program to gain a broader perspective. In the morning, we had discussion-based classes with students from various nationalities divided into levels. In the afternoon, we engaged in in-depth learning about British literature, sociology, and culture through VSP classes. In particular, the 'Tandem Learning' program was well organized, allowing us to be matched 1:1 with Korean language students at the University of Sheffield. This provided a great opportunity to meet once a week and exchange learning in Korean and English. ▲ This shows us learning about various British cultures and markets. / Photo = provided by Na Kyung Lee While participating in this program, Na Kyung Lee said, 'At first, I felt overwhelmed and afraid living in an unfamiliar country where I couldn't communicate. However, as time passed and I enjoyed and experienced different cultures from my own, I found that 17 weeks had flown by. Although it costs a lot to stay abroad for half a year, that experience has become a priceless asset that cannot be measured in money. Therefore, I would strongly encourage anyone who has the opportunity to seize it without hesitation. This experience can be a significant turning point in life, providing a chance to gain a new perspective and see oneself in a broader light.' She expressed that this international exchange program at our university was an excellent opportunity for her and that it provided a valuable experience in learning about British culture, sociology, and market issues. |
